Life in Wasilla Alaska

Spring and Fall in Alaska are two almost non-existant seasons. I judge spring by two things, green up, and people riding motor cycles. When I see people out on bikes, I know it’s spring.

Spring green explodes it seems, almost overnight. Likewise, Fall arrives one day, blanketing Alaska in brilliant colors. The winds pick up, and as quickly as they changed color, they’re blown off the trees as the termination dust creeps down the mountains. It looked pretty rainy towards Hatcher Pass today, and the snow is at least 1/3 was down from the top. Yikes!

It’s also the time of year I dread, tire changeover season. Wait to long, and you’re stuck in long frantic lines, with the rest of the hard core Alaskans, that wait until the last minute. Get them changed over too early, and run the risk of wearing the tires/and studs down needlessly.

I already have one studded tire on. I had to switch it out after I blew out the side of my regular tire. Whoops. I didn’t feel like buying a new one, and at the time didn’t have the money anyway. When does anyone ever really have money for new tires?

It’s a beautiful time of year though. The contrast of the fall colors against the white topped mountains. Fall brings a brisk clear air in, and the mountains look bigger than ever. I just wish it lasted a little longer! Overnight, soon, we’ll wake up to a fresh coat of white paint across the landscape, that won’t disappear until May. This year, there were mountains where the snow never really melted in our cooler than normal summer. Par for the course I guess.

Have a great Monday!

Laura
