Get some shots! :)

I’m compelled to write about Debbie Shank again. She’s featured on CNN’s Top News Today.

If you’re not familiar with her story, please check into it, google it.

Take action be emailing Walmart.  Information on that here:

And in a completely unrelated music blog, the Lefsetz Letter, Bob Lefsetz talks about his recent experience at Walmart, and I couldn’t agree more.

Both excellent reads.sIMG_3179

Egg Meatball Supreme!

Egg Meatball Supreme!

So, what the f*** is that? It’s a hard boiled egg, inside a meatball.

Are your gag reflexes kicking in yet? Imagine to your delight and amazement, biting into one of these bad boys. Thinking you’re only getting a giant meatball? Think again! It’s an EGG! Just in time for Easter too, what a fun surprise! I think the only thing that would’ve made this better, is if a chocolate bunny had been nestled inside the egg yolk. Or maybe the pastel colored egg shell left in tact, for an extra crunchy treat! Now THAT would be a culinary masterpiece!

Turducken’s beware, you may have met your match!

Ok, I wouldn’t really eat my cat. But she REALLY pissed me off this morning. AT 4AM!

First, lets just start by saying, she’s insane. Also, this doesn’t happen everyday.

I’m sure she’s not the only cat, that decides when it’s time for you to wake up and pay attention to her. She’s going to make damn sure you do. She’s fine, until I make one move, roll over in bed, stretch my leg, and then it’s over, my sleep that is. She’s immediately jumps up on the bed, starts meowing, and walking all around and over me. I tell her to be quiet… no go. I shew her off the bed, several times. I yell at her to cut it out. When she realizes she’s not going to get anywhere meowing, and jumping on the bed…. she resorts to hopping around on anything she can in the room to make noise. A piece of paper, a magazine, a box. And when that doesn’t work, then she’ll stretch on the door jam, and scratch her nails.

I’d had it this morning. It’s so simple you think, just close her out of the room! You don’t know Chloe. Not to mention that we don’t have central heat, and I rely on my door being open to stay warm. But this morning I did shut her out. To no avail, as her strategy with any closed door is to knock. Yep, I said knock. Knocking in Chloe terms is making a run for the door, and throwing herself against it. It make such a racket it sounds like a SWAT team trying to break in (i’ve seen it on t.v.). This morning, I kick her out, shut the door, and put a pillow over my head. After a couple of knocks, I yell at her again. Finally she gives up, but at this point, I’ve been awake for almost 45 minutes, just trying to get some peace and quiet until my 6am alarm. I’m pissed, and the adrenaline is flowing. So I cave and get up. This might be a 2 Americano day!

“Love Is Not a Pie”

“Love is not a pie.”

I heard that quote yesterday, and wanted to blog it.  I think it sums up perfectly, how it is possible to love all your children fully and equally.  How you’re able to love friends and family… all at the same time.  Yeah yeah, I might be bordering on hokey here, didn’t mean for it to sound that way… It was just something that stuck with me, so I wanted to pass it on.

A lot of people spend their lives trying to please someone, a family member, a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife.  Sister, brother, mother.  Trying to get a bigger piece of pie.  Thinking that there is 100%, that needs to be divided up accordingly.  The reality is, it doesn’t work that way.  It’s possible to love everyone with a full pie. :-)

I *heart* Dexter…

So I’m watching Dexter on “regular” t.v.  I’ve seen these episodes half a dozen times each probably, but I was curious how it would be portrayed without Deb’s constant string of curse words, and obviously the gore that IS Dexter.

In one way, I’m glad it will reach a broader audience.  In another, i’m thinking… “HEY these people didn’t PAY to watch this like I did!”

But I guess it’s Ok.  I mean, they’re showing Season 1, and us Dexterites, are patiently awaiting Season 3… hurry up already.

If you haven’t checked out Dexter, or you like what you see on regular t.v., I highly recommend renting it on DVD, and seeing the full episodes. :)

Mission Accomplished

Daylight : 7:41 a.m. - 6:41 p.m

I don’t know why as you get older, things seem to take more time.  Or maybe time passes faster, not sure.  Maybe both?

I set a personal goal for myself of getting up earlier, and trying to make it to the gym before work.  Not a difficult task right? Anyone who knows me, knows I’m just not a morning person. Given the choice, I would probably sleep until 11am everyday, later on the weekends.  As many 9-5′ers know, staying motivated long enough to go to the gym after work isn’t that easy.  You get home, maybe grab something to eat, and then couch potato’ism sets in.

So over the last few weeks (YES WEEKS) I’ve slowly started setting my alarm earlier, and even though I didn’t actually LEAVE the house to go to the gym, I made myself get up, mill around the house, check my email.  This morning I actually went to the gym!

Yeah I know… exciting stuff.

This is one of my favorite times of year.  Even though I know we’ll get more snow, and cold… all of the trees are red with buds. Otherwise known as “break-up”, it’s one of the messiest times of year.  Everything is mucky and dirty.  All the piles of snow, and sheets of ice are melting. It’s important to keep the window cleaner full in car. It’s an exciting time of year though, the days are longer (11 hours of daylight now!!), and spring is right around the corner.  I’ll keep you posted on “green-up”, when overnight the landscape transforms from dull and brown, to the brightest, freshest green.  It’s hard to describe.  I’ve never lived in a place where it seems like every plant, tree and grass comes alive at the same time.

Viva Alaska!

Iditarod - And a Sunday drive…

Daylight : 7:47 a.m. - 6:36 p.m

Bird Creek Alaska

I’ve been meaning to post for a couple of days.  **slow**

Saturday was gloomy and overcast, but the sun came out Sunday so I headed out.  If I had been thinking, I probably would’ve headed to Willow, Alaska for the official re-start of the Iditarod. I headed in the other direction though, towards Girdwood. The further south I went, the cloudier it got, so at the Girdwood cutoff I turned around and headed back.  I stopped at Bird Creek, and got some pictures. One is posted here, more soon. On my way back, driving across Potter’s Marsh, I saw the coolest thing. I almost turned around to shoot it, but the Seward Highway across the Marsh is a tricky place to turn around, so I passed it up.  During the winter, the shallow waters of the Marsh obviously freeze.  In the summer, it’s a premier place to shoot (sorry take pictures of) a zillion different migrating birds. Sunday however, there were a lot of people out on the Marsh. Some were ice skating, seems pretty normal right? Others were flying kites, flying remote controlled planes, and my favorite… remote controlled cars! I never really thought about how much fun it would be to run remote controlled devices on the ice.

The other exciting thing that happened this past weekend was the start of the Iditarod. Before I moved to Alaska, and went to the ceremonial start of the race in 1997, I didn’t understand the spirit of the race, or how eager the dogs were to run. I was probably more on the side of the people, who thought it was cruel, or that the dogs were forced to run. What did I know?  To the contrary. Of course there are people that abuse their animals. But the level of care and attention that these dogs are given on and off the trail is amazing, and has only improved over the years.  The Iditarod Website has live GPS updates of the where the dog teams are.  I suggest checking it out if you’ve never looked into it before.  A great companion for learning more about the Iditarod or Alaska in general is the watching/downloading the Alaska Podshow. Scott Sloan put together great audio and video podcasts about all things Alaska.  Please stop by and tell him Laura says hi…  :)

Almost all other countries have GE labels on their foods, the United States and Canada don’t. At the very least, we need to get this labeling on our foods, get these foods out of our schools, and educate people on the snowball effects of this dangerous practice.

Buy organic, or purchase products that have VOLUNTARILY put the Non-GE label on their foods.
