Nothern Lights - Wasilla Alaska

I finally got a couple of good aurora shots tonight. I was lucky, and they were out bright. I left the house around 3am to go to WalMARX to get some Zicam (I feel a cold coming on
), looked up, and saw the most gorgeous display of the year. Of course, it’s -15F outside. I snapped a few 30 second or so exposures, before heading out, towards Hatcher Pass. I got one shot up there that I liked, I’ll post it tomorrow. I’m not sure what the wind chill is, but it’s definitely around -30 to -40. I’m sure I didn’t help my cold out much by standing out in this weather… but hey, anything for some good shots!
I wish I could explain the way the aurora looks when you’re standing below it, especially when the winds are blowing pretty strong, and it’s almost like trails of light, blowing through the sky. Watching the lights take form and shape, disappearing, then reappearing. The trailing lights, that look like beautiful ribbons being dropped from the sky. It’s really magical, and one of the things I like most about Alaska.
I really want a wide angle lens however, to capture more of the sky and the shapes. So incredible.
